Finding Nemo

So my nickname at work is Nemo.

The TNT (team in training) started swim practices last week of November. So of course I told my story about my first practice to my coworkers. There were plenty of laughs. Note: I have not been swimming in years, let alone competitively. Spent $100 on swimming gear all excited about my first practice which by the way is at The Ridgewood YMCA (I will talk about the location of all these practices later).

So on my first day, I forgot to bring my contacts and flip flops. Remember this is my first practice so I don't know anyone. Well luckily I did bump into someone - I met her the day I signed up (she was a great help). I get dressed and have to walk downstairs to the pool WITHOUT MY GLASSES. I am late because I am trying to figure out which pool and everyone is fuzzy looking. And Uggghh I am barefoot! Anyway, found my way, the coach is instructing how to put on my goggles (I asked cause I don't know) and I am told do 3-50 laps freestyle as a warm up. Ok. No not Ok I am out of shape and forgot how to swim. One lap and I thought I was going to pass out. The drills were a little easier but I forgot how to breath (you know so I won't choke to death). Just a hot mess.

Now here is the best part (towards the end of practice) somehow as I was swimming behind my teammate he kicked a BIG SURGE of water into my mouth, I started choking, then I realized I was not in the shallow part of the pool now I know I am going down. Arms flailing in the air, choking, gasping for air...I know the coaches were like What the Heck (that is the PG version). Anyway I can tell you one of the coaches just chuckles when they see me. LOL

Well today was swim practice and I am tired. And wishing it will get better. I mean I am not drowning, just out of shape and can't quite find my rhythm. I hope I FIND NEMO soon!

Getting Ready

Back in November I decided to do the LLS (leukemia lymphoma society's) team in training. I have been talking about it for a while and discussing it with Tina (William's sister) . I figure this would be a great opportunity to raise awareness, I wasn't so successful when I did Light the Night.
Anyway, they have several events from Marathons, Hiking and Triathlons. So how did I chose the Columbia triathlon..because the money we have to raise is due on William's birthday. They whole reason why I am doing this. I was going back and forth with Hiking (I know I can Hike lol).
So I finally finished setting up the website ( Just have to enter the 300 email addresses that I lost when I had to switch computers).
So my story ended up in the paper and there is no turning back. I'm slowly getting out of my state of shock that I really volunteered for this. I am excited and scared at the same time.
My hope is that I will be able to raise awareness and increase the Bone Marrow donation among African Americans.
If I succeed in this task, maybe I will run to raise awareness about colon cancer also. My mother passed away in 2002 from colon cancer and it is such a preventable disease.
Well here we go!!!
